Lesson 1

ON MONEY

Islamic teachings on wealth emphasize the delicate balance between material success and spiritual fulfillment. Wealth is seen as a trial and responsibility, where its pursuit must be tempered with ethical considerations and a focus on the afterlife. The essence of these teachings is to use wealth responsibly, avoid excessive attachment, and remember that true richness lies in one's faith in Allah and actions towards others.

Who was Imam Ghazali?

Imam Ghazali, born in Tabiran, Persia [450/1058] was a renowned intellectual and Sufi adept, recognized for his legal virtuosity, nicknamed Shafi'i the Second.

After studying jurisprudence at Tus, he traveled extensively, taking Sacred Knowledge from teachers including al-Juwayni. Following Juwayni's death, Ghazali debated scholars in Baghdad, impressing the vizier Nizam al-Mulk, who appointed him to a teaching post at the Nizamiyya Academy. Word of his brilliance spread, and scholars journeyed to hear him. Mid-career, concerned for his soul, he resigned, pursuing Sufism in Damascus in seclusion for ten years.

He emerged to produce "Ihya' Ulum al-Din" (Giving Life to the Religious Sciences), a classic on god-fearingness, obedience to Allah, and spiritual attainments, reflecting his profound understanding of human psychology and spirituality. He wrote nearly two hundred other works on various Islamic disciplines. He died in Tabiran in 505/1111.
